UPDATES

current as of 2/19/26

Thank you for your interest! Heart & Shoal is closed to new clients at this time.

This is so my current clients are able to get the amount/frequency of lessons to fully complete their learning journeys. I will re-evaluate this in June to decide if the time is right to accept new clients again. Until then, the booking page will only be available to my current clients (via a link sent out by email.)

 Kind regards, Grace

Why choose us?

"the joy of swimming belongs to everyone."

a calm, welcoming environment at a private pool

you'll step into a warm pool-house, grab a chair on deck, and listen to some oldies playing in the background before your lesson. Afterwards, there are fresh towels available for use and stickers/candy.

an LGBT & POC friendly business

People of color have historically been excluded from public swimming pools and still experience microaggressions and othering, particularly in areas that are less diverse (demographically, Portland is largely white). I am a culturally competent instructor who seeks to make all my clients feel comfortable and supported in their learning journey.

My business is a safe space for LGBT children and families. Families of all kinds are welcome here.

smaller class sizes for personalized attention (3-4 swimmers per class).

In larger classes, kids can get lost in the mix and not progress. I get to know each swimmer individually and adapt my teaching strategies to help them learn. One child may learn best with firm direction and fun challenges, while another needs gentle encouragement and reassurance. I never use fear or force in the process to learn. I utilize a consent-based teaching model based on the best practices of sport psychology and child development.

affordable group lesson options (currently an average of $10 cheaper per lesson than our competitors in the Portland area!) A sliding scale payment option is available for group lessons; please inquire further via email if interested.
